We Need To Stop Being Blind To Gun Violence In America

When you are in a sea of guns, there are no good guys and bad guys, there are just people with guns! Any one of them can shoot or be killed simply for walking around with a gun. Let me give you some facts on gun violence, gun ownership and control in the United States.

 

 

FACT: Gun owners outnumber police by a ratio of 79 to 1.

 

 

FACT: Civilians own roughly 310 million firearms.

 

 

FACT: A study over the last 30 years has shown for every percentage point that gun ownership goes up, there is an equal correlation of an increase of the same percentage in gun violence.

 

 

FACT: Gun death rates are lower in states that have stricter gun control measures such as requirements on storage and assault weapons.

 

 

FACT: Drivers who carry a firearm are 44% more likely to be involved in a road rage incident.

 

 

FACT: In the state of Texas, which has one of the most lenient stances on gun ownership, gun owners with concealed carry licenses were sentenced for threatening someone with a firearm 4.8 times more than those without.

 

 

FACT: For every instance of self defense with a firearm, there are 7 assaults or murders, 11 suicides and 4 accidents involving firearms

 

 

FACT: Studies have shown that assault victims are 4.5 times more likely to be shot in the altercation than those who are not carrying a firearm.

 

 

FACT: Women are 5 times more likely to be a victim of gun violence at the hands of their spouse, boyfriend or a family member than by a stranger.

 

 

FACT: The NRA claims that violent video games are the real reason for gun violence, yet when comparing game ownership in US versus China we see a disturbing fact! Japan spends more money per capita on violent video games, yet in the US has around 11,000 firearm deaths compared to 6 deaths in Japan.

 

 

FACT: For every 100 citizens in the US, there are roughly 88 firearms! Nearly 75% of all gun owners are men, owning an average of 8 guns per owner.

 

 

FACT: NRA likes to claim that more people are buying guns, but the fact is only 37% of Americans are gun owners, down from nearly 50% in 1973.

 

 

FACT: An investigation found that 62% of online gun sellers would sell a firearm to someone who couldn’t pass a background check. When investigators posed as straw purchasers in California, 20% of licensed dealers were willing to sell a gun to a known straw purchaser.

 

 

FACT: There have been 0 mass shootings prevented by a “Good guy with a gun”. No good guy has been able to stop a mass murder in the last 33 years!

 

 

These are the facts, America has a gun problem and we need to do something now!
